$9.2 Million In Unemployment Insurance Modernization in Washington, DC

The District of Columbia, under The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), has been awarded $9,210,994 in unemployment insurance (UI) modernization incentive funds. Washington, DC qualified for the funds by changing the qualification for unemployment insurance to allow for more recent earning.

The Department of Employment Services will have the funds available to pay unemployment benefits. The council may also choose to appropriate the funds towards its unemployment insurance program or by delivering employment services.

The Secretary of Labor for Washington, DC said "We applaud the Department of Labor for supporting the district as we strive to provide exemplary employment-related services to those who need them the most during this economic crisis," said D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty. "These new funds will allow our Department of Employment Services to make our unemployment insurance system more efficient, to help get people back on their feet faster."

The ARRA appropriated a total of $7 billion dollars in unemployment insurance modernization incentive payments to qualified states. For more information visit the Department of Labors official ARRA site.
