What is federal disability retirement?

If you are a federal employee with a disability, you may be eligible for disability retirement benefits.  Disability retirement is a category of federal retirement benefits.  There are several requirements for eligibility.  First, you must suffer from a medical condition or disability that is expected to last for at least a year and that causes you to be disabled in at least one essential element of your job.  Second, your agency must certify that it is unable to provide reasonable accommodations that would enable you to keep working.  Finally, you must also meet length of service requirements.

What are my rights?

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) processes applications for disability retirement benefits. OPM has strict filing deadlines.  OPM must receive your application within one year from the date of your separation from the agency.  It may take several months to obtain all of the medical documentation needed to submit your application, so you should get started as soon as possible.

The benefits you receive depend on several factors, including whether you are under the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) or the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS), your salary, and whether you receive any other benefits.
