To be eligible for unpaid medical leave, you must have been employed for at least one year, have worked 1,250 hours during the 12-month period immediately prior to your leave, and your employer must have at least 50 employees.
Provided that these conditions are met, you can take medical leave for:
- Caring for your own medical needs
- Caring for an immediate family member's medical needs for a serious medical condition
- Maternity or paternity leave after the birth or adoption of a child
The leave does not have to be continuous. For example, you can take periodic leave to visit a doctor, physical therapist, mental health counselor or other medical professional.
